This seaside retreat was designed as a tribute to the classic Nantucket Beach Cottage. It preserves and updates the Nantucket vernacular tradition, respectful of surrounding wetlands and vistas. The original house was a collection of existing bathhouse sheds fro the 1940’s. The clients and architect loved the charm and scale of the original structures and strove to preserve that character in the new construction. The existing garage structure was preserved and renovated for the expanding family. The house sits comfortably atop a wood piling foundation, allowing it to breathe. The rooflines remain as low as possible to protect the panoramic views all around. The existing bulkhead was repaired and extended to stabilize the beach and prevent erosion. The Nantucket Conservation Commission oversaw the construction process, verifying that the fragile ecosystem around the house was preserved.
